About Virgin River

This scenic 162-mile long river that runs through the states of Nevada, Utah and Arizona starts in the Navajo Reservoir in Dixie National Forest and ends at the Colorado River at the Lake Mead Reservoir. Virgin River flows through Zion National Park past the town of St. George to meet the Santa Clara River and then to the Virgin River Gorge, which is a notable recreation destination. The river is responsible for carving many of the rock formations of Zion National Park. Virgin River's surrounding area contains a variety of flora and fauna including the Mexican spotted owl, desert bighorn sheep, foxes, cottontail rabbits, rock squirrels, bobcats, cottonwoods and willows.

Zion National Park

Utah's first national park that was established in 1919 contains a wide variety of canyons, mountains, cliffs, rivers, lakes, natural arches, buttes, mesas, forests, deserts, wildlife and parts of the Grand Staircase in its 229 square miles. Zion National Park that was originally home to the Anasazi Native Americans nearly 12,000 years ago and many artifacts of ancient life have been discovered there. Park highlights are Zion Canyon, Temples and Towers of the Virgin, Horse Ranch Mountain, Angel's Landing Trail and The Subway. It has seven trails, three campground areas, more than 1,000 plant species, 207 bird species and 67 different mammal species.
