About Vasa Museum

The Vasa Museum in Stockholm is dedicated to the ship’s preservation and history. King Gustav II Adolf commissioned the building of Vasa in 1626, but it tragically sunk on its maiden voyage, only making it to the middle of Stockholm harbor. Recovery efforts for the ship and its 25 victims began almost immediately but were not completed until 1961. Today, Vasa Museum houses the preserved ship and more than 40,000 objects found in and around the wreckage site. From these, visitors learn about life aboard the ship and Swedish life in the 1600s.
