Situated south of Salt Lake City, Provo is the third largest city in Utah. The city was discovered by Spanish Franciscan missionary-explorer Father Silvestre Veldez de Escalante in 1776 and was inhabited by 33 Mormon families from Salt Lake City in 1849. Provo is home to the Brigham Young University, a private university operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the Peaks Ice Arena, which hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002.
