Providence is the capital city of Rhode Island and is one of the oldest cities in the U.S. Providence was founded in 1636 and was one of the original thirteen colonies of the United States. The city is located on the head of the Narragansett Bay and was founded on seven hills, similar to the city of Rome. The city's downtown area is made up of many historical buildings of Victorian style dating back to the 19th century. One of Providence's most notable sites is the Waterplace Park which is situated on the Woonasquatucket River in downtown Providence.
