About Prince Edward Island

French explorer Jacques Cartier called this Canadian island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence "the fairest land that may possibly be seen" during his 1534 expedition. Prince Edward Island was settled by the French centuries later in the 1720s and is noted as the "Birthplace of Confederation" because its capital city Charlottetown hosted the first of many meetings in 1864 on the Canadian Confederation making the country its own nation in 1867. In addition to many historic sites related to the Confederation, the island offers immaculate beaches, vast golf courses and a vibrant arts and culture scene.
