About Ponte Vecchio, Florence

The 95-foot long Medieval stone arch bridge crosses the Arno River in Florence and contains various merchants in its structure. Ponte Vecchio was built in 1345 and designed by Taddeo Gaddi after two earlier versions were destroyed by floods. It was the only Florence bridge not ruined by the Germans during World War II. The City of Florence has had problems with lovers placing a padlock on the bridge and throwing the key in the river as some tradition says the practice will ensure the pair is forever together.
