This city in northeastern France dates back to the second century BC and has a strong German influence, especially in its cuisine. Although Metz has been subjected to wars, it is now a lively city with many layers of history. The waters of the Moselle run through Metz and around Petit Saulcy island where visitors find one of France’s oldest theaters and Temple Neuf. Old town has a 17th century square called the Place d’Armes. It includes the Tourism Office and Cathedral of Saint Etienne with several windows designed by Chagall. Behind the cathedral is a group of museums focused on archaeology and art.
