Merrit Island is a census-designated place in Florida, along the Atlantic Ocean. The island is not part of any official city; its central part, known as Merritt City, is where majority of the population resides. Merrit Island was part of a large amount of land that was given to a nobleman from the king of Spain at that time; Merritt Island's settlement and agricultural growth can be dated back to the mid-19th century. The island is mostly known for its Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and the John F. Kennedy Space Center, which are both located on the northern part of the peninsula.
