About Matthias Church

Also known as The Church of Our Lady, Matthias Church was erected in 1255. Many of Hungary’s kings had their coronations here. It gets its nickname from King Matthias who ruled from 1458 to 1490. Although it’s been constantly renovated to stay in style and for repair, the church still has its original foundation, columns and some of its original walls. Frigyes Schulek (who also built Fisherman’s Bastion) completed the last reconstruction in 1896. See the stained glass windows and frescoes, and don't miss the double sarcophagus of King Bela III and his wife in Trinity Chapel.
