About Kaimu Black Sand Beach

The eruption of the Kilauea volcano and consequent inundation of Kalapana and neighboring Kaimu - directly in the path of a major lava flow - may have spelled the end for the community, but not nearby Kaimu Black Sand Beach, which, thanks to the miracle of Mother Nature, has now risen from the ashes. Renamed New Kaimu Black Sand Beach, the recreational area is accessible from Highways 130 and 137 on the island of Hawaii.
