The Pennsylvania borough is significant in United States history as it was the site of the Abraham Lincoln's 1863 Gettysburg Address and the American Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg was named after on of its first settlers Samuel Gettys who opened up a tavern there in 1761. Popular sites are Gettysburg National Battlefield, Gettysburg National Military Park, American Civil War Wax Museum, Eisenhower National Historic Site, Adams County Historical Society, Camp David Museum, General Lee's Headquarters Museum and Gettysburg Seminary Ridge Museum.
