About Gaithersburg

The city of Gaithersburg is located in the state of Maryland, and is divided into east and west sections. The east section is known for its older buildings and historical landmarks, including the eastern section's "Olde Town." The western side of the city has wealthier and more urban neighborhoods and includes communities that were designed under the New Urbanism architectural movement. The city of Gaithersburg was settled in 1765 and was originally named Log Town. The city was formerly an agricultural town and was called Gaithersburg by the 1850s after settler Benjamin Gaither who inherited most of Gaitherburg's land. The National Institute of Standards and Technology is headquartered in Gaithersburg.
