See the world-famous museum of native son Salvador Dali in the last major town before the Spanish/French border. In fact, Figueres has a French feel. It is also the birthplace of lesser-known Narcis Monturiol i Estarriol, inventor of the first successful machine-powered submarine. During the Spanish Civil War, this Catalan town was repeatedly bombed by rebels as it remained loyal to the Republican government.
