This 14th-century courtyard castle with its 100-foot-high gatehouse, regal Lord’s Hall with musicians' gallery and double fireplace is one of the best-preserved castles in Scotland. Doune Castle has remained largely unchanged since it was built for the Duke of Albany and was a favorite royal hunting lodge, but also of great strategic importance because it controlled the route between the Lowlands and Highlands. Film buffs will recognize the castle from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," and an audio tour of the castle is narrated by Monty Python’s Terry Jones.
