Since Roman times, Dax has been beloved for its thermal waters, long believed to have curative properties. Roman walls dating from the 4th century still stand, and a Roman crypt houses the remains of a 2nd century Gallo-Roman temple. Despite its ancient origins, Dax is also well known for its Art Deco architecture. With its proximity to Spain, bullfighting remains a popular local sport.
