The census designated place of Cherokee is a popular tourist destination and cultural area. Cherokee is located in the Swain and Jackson counties of North Carolina, within the Qualla Boundary, the land trust of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Cherokee is the headquarters for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, a Native American tribe that occupied the Qualla Boundary centuries before European settlement. Cherokee still has some streets and building names written in Cherokee syllabary. Cherokee is located at the entrance of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park and is home to popular tourist attractions, including the Cherokee Botanical Garden and Nature Trail.
