Founded in North Holland in the 13th century, Alkmaar is a medieval city most well known for its traditional cheese market. Considered a must see cultural destination of Holland, the town's many attractions included the Grote or Sint-Laurenskerk, the Beatles Museum, and, of course, the cheese market. Spanning from April to September, the cheese market is a reenactment of traditional cheese market practices from the medieval period and displayed in the Waagplein ("weighing square") every Friday morning between 10am and 12:30pm. Popular among tourists, the event is explained in Dutch, German, and English.
